Nuclear Threat Initiative is currently seeking a professional, creative, and collaborative Major Gifts Officer to help build the organization’s capacity to increase philanthropic and major individual support for the organization’s mission. The individual will also contribute to the development team’s overall efforts to increase funding support. Reporting directly to the Vice President, the selected candidate will work with the Development team and NTI leadership to manage major giving at NTI. In coordination with the Vice President of Development, the Major Gifts Officer will create and execute an annual plan to increase major giving through tailored engagement and outreach strategies and will help NTI build and strengthen relationships with major donors and prospects.
The Development team has the opportunity to shape the next generation of donors and supporters and take this vision for the development program from ideation to inception. As part of this effort, the Major Gifts Officer will maintain powerful, personal relationships with supporters, and identify and steward new relationships, with a special emphasis on building out the major donor program.
Primary duties and responsibilities
- Building and overseeing a portfolio of 80-100 prospects with individualized strategies, focused on major giving prospects (with capacity of $100k – $1M).
- Planning and facilitating leadership engagement with major giving prospects.
- Creating and implementing segment-specific strategies for major giving prospects.
- Documenting and illustrating major gift pipeline progress for NTI leadership using Salesforce.
- Overseeing the moves management system for donors and prospects in Salesforce; compiling lists of donors and prospects and tracking next steps for all priority individuals.
- Working to build a planned giving program at NTI, including identifying planned giving prospects, responding to potential donors, educating leadership about planned/legacy giving, properly acknowledging planned gifts, and managing the small group of existing legacy donors.
- Supporting the development team and program teams in revenue generation initiatives and events as needed.
The ideal candidate will drive a collaborative and strategic team approach to development and be able to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. This person will be a relationship-builder comfortable engaging with highlevel individuals and unafraid to engage in direct discussions around financial support. They are an exceptional written and oral communicator with the creativity and skills to develop a long-term major gifts fundraising strategy. This candidate is a team player who is willing to pitch in as needed regardless of title or function.
Qualifications
- At least 3-5 years of relevant development experience for a non-profit organization.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- You exhibit high integrity and sound independent judgment.
- You have demonstrated familiarity with individual stewardship and cultivation strategies, major giving cycles, retention strategies, and communication and engagement metrics.
- You have excellent communication, writing, and editing skills.
- You have previous major gift fundraising experience.
- You have knowledge of Salesforce or a similar donor database preferred, including proficiency in reporting, dashboards, and basic administrator functions.
- You have familiarity with or interest in international relations, global security, and/or existential risk reduction (preferred).
